Once upon a memory
There was a small girl
With grey-blue eyes and yellow curls
Who loved with all she had.
Her mom dressed her every morning
In denim rompers and white socks with ruffles
She braided her hair and wiped her face.
Her dad hugged her once before bed
And twice before school
Because she hated leaving him.

Once upon a more recent memory
There was a small girl
With grey-blue eyes and golden hair
Who loved all she still had.
Her mom left one morning
After promising years before she'd never leave.
Her dad hugged her once in a while
And cried twice a day in the basement
Because he hated her for leaving.

Once upon a present moment
There was a small girl
Trapped in a body too old for her
With grey-blue eyes full of missing memories.
Her mom calls every night
And tries so hard to make everything right
But she can't.
Her dad hugs his new wife
Who is all he cares for now in life
And the small girl's just a reminder
Of all the ghosts he wishes to leave behind.
